CHAPTER 25

The morning after the election, Cyrus woke with a doozy of a headache and blurred vision. He popped some aspirin then forced hard fried eggs down his gullet.

Ray had met him for drinks the night before to watch the poll results, and when the winner’s name scrolled across the screens hanging in every corner of the bar, he’d allowed himself just one more beer.

He vaguely remembered Ray shoving him into an Uber. Cyrus had no idea what it ended up costing him. He didn’t want to put Ray out, so he’d have to ask Byron to come and give him a lift to his truck.

Memories as blurry as his eyesight trickled into his consciousness as he recalled the arrival of a late-night text as he’d fumbled with his keys at the cabin door. It’d annoyed Cyrus to be in possession of his Bureau phone at all, and the double-vision as he’d tried to read the text made it all the worse. So he’d left it for morning.

He glanced at the phone resting on the counter. It could wait a little longer.

Cyrus flopped onto the couch and flicked on the television to check the morning-after coverage of the election results. He got exactly two channels with his HD antenna, and they were both local. A reporter held a microphone in front of the familiar storefront representing the Sutton headquarters.

“The late Gabrielle Sutton narrowly defeated incumbent senator Lincoln Seymour last night, by a total of just over two thousand votes. Polls in the weeks following her death had shown a tight race, but in the end, her campaign’s street machine managed to pull out what was one of the closest races across the country.

“Sutton Campaign Manager Claire Cochran and DNC Party Chair Jonathan Holloway shared the podium for a bittersweet victory speech to a crowd of Sutton supporters. We spoke with Cochran after the results were announced. and asked for insight as to who would fill the chair in the deceased assemblywoman’s stead.”

The coverage cut to prerecorded footage outside the ballroom where the DNC accepted the victory on Sutton’s behalf. Claire Cochran opened a door then stepped into the hallway.

“Can you tell us who will fill the chair for the senator elect?” The reporter shoved a microphone with the local news logo toward her.

“Whoever takes the seat should represent the values that gave Gabby the victory.”

“Were you close to the assemblywoman?” the reporter asked.

“As close as we could be. But Gabby wasn’t just my friend, she was a friend to Colorado’s people. I hope the governor takes that into consideration when making the nomination. And I hope the nominee does his or her best to uphold Gabby’s vision.”

The footage cut back to the reporter in a live shot.

“But Action Five has learned one name on the short list—Russell Grayson, who recently ran for Sutton’s assembly seat but dropped out of the race three months ago.”

A middle-aged man with crow’s feet around his eyes and wisps of gray through a balding comb-over appeared in a picture window next to the reporter.
